How to follow Jesus?

This question corresponds with similar queries as, how to be a Christian? or how to believe in Jesus?

First we need to define and clarify with specificity, what it means to follow Jesus? As we are saved and desire to follow Jesus, we need to absolutely understand that we no longer live in the flesh.

We are to no longer follow the cravings and desirable things of the world. We are also no longer partakers or attendees of the world and their way of walking and need to live in the spirit as God is a spirit being. As state in:

Galatians 5:25 - If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.

Living in the spirit is completely living life as though Jesus lived on earth, and living like Jesus is following Jesus to the Father. In that we pray like Jesus, behave like Jesus, teach his way, to be humble like Jesus, forgive like Jesus and help his way.

Then when we are following Jesus, and living in the spirit it states that we believe that he died on the cross for us, that Jesus rose again, and has ascended to heaven and he will soon come back for his sheep.

As we decide to commit to follow Jesus, we let God slowly cleanse and filter out our old ways and become a new person. As state in

Colossians 3:9 - Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds.

and

Colossians 3:10 - And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him:

We should also not so easily get side tracked and run back to the world. Though we live in the world we do not walk with the world, yet we still show love to the people and work among them.

This is what it means or what it takes to follow Jesus, to being a Christian that we need to commit the rest of our life to living a righteous separate life. Ultimately, we need to be holy as God is holy. As state in:

1 Peter 1:16 - Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.

We now turn our attention on how to follow Jesus? The method of following Jesus has no one size fits all solution, there is no repetitious routine or set times in a day to give God. The only method to following Jesus is to let God himself lead us along his righteous path.

As we commence set our hearts to sincerely wanting to follow him no matter what road he leads us on, God will direct our steps in the right path. As stated in:

Deuteronomy 4:29 - But if from thence thou shalt seek the Lord thy God, thou shalt find him, if thou seek him with all thy heart and with all thy soul.

Our Lord Jesus will also be with us all of the way, no matter what is placed in front of us.

The first step to leading a spiritual life is to ask our Lord God in prayer to help us understand him more. When we pray each day to our Lord God, we need to also surrender our lives and our plans into the hands of Jesus. This grants Jesus permission to transform our lives.

We need to pray in every occasion, that God will be in the center of every action, every decision and in any occasion. We need to begin our day with pray and we need to end our day with prayer. As stated in:

Philippians 4:6 - Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.

With prayer, we now focus on learning about Jesus, and the only way to fully understand about Jesus and to listen to him is by taking the time to read and study the Bible, the word of God. As stated in:

1 Peter 2:2 - As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:

The shaping of our righteous path depends on the time and commitment that is given to reading and learning about our Lord God. We must not just read and study, we also need to remember his word and that we follow the methods of living a spiritual life.

We have our normal work, we have our daily responsibilities, however we also need to allocate a dedicated time each day towards spending it with God to understand Jesus. As stated in:

Luke 4:4 - And Jesus answered him, saying, it is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.

The more we read the bible the more we learn about Jesus, and the more the word of God shapes us.

If we do not give God enough time each day, the forces of darkness will take the opportunity to fill the gaps in our minds that we neglected to protect, with evil desires and will lead us away from Jesus.

Next, as we now spend time in our own home with God, we also need to gather in the house of God, with other followers of Jesus to worship and hear the message of God. As stated in:

Deuteronomy 31:12 - Gather the people together, men, and women, and children, and thy stranger that is within thy gates, that they may hear, and that they may learn, and fear the Lord your God, and observe to do all the words of the Law:

When we gather in church, we become stronger in his presence. We also meet with like-minded people, and they now become our new brothers and sister in Christ, creating a new spiritual family.

Finally, those that follow our Lord God, also must place their faith in him. As state in:

Hebrews 10:38 - Now the just shall live by faith: but if any man draw back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him.

Faith is equivalent to trust, that we trust God in all these things, that he has saved us and delivered us from eternal destruction. That Jesus will also preserve our righteousness through every storm until the day we are called to his kingdom. As stated in:

Philippians 1:6 - Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:

Let us live with this hope that as we turn to Jesus, as we believe in Jesus, as we now follow Jesus that we will also one day meet him in his kingdom in heaven.

"Our Lord Jesus will also be with us all the way, no matter what is placed in front of us"
